This week we salute Holland America Line for being an excellent partner of Marine Conservation Institute. Currently in the fifth year of a six-year partnership that began in 2010, our organizations share a passion for protecting the oceans for this and future generations.
We have worked with Holland America Line on a variety of programs including helping them provide sustainable seafood choices for their guests and working with them to create ocean conservation videos for guests to view in their cabins. We are also working together on a program highlighting marine protected areas around the world. Holland America Line will be educating guests on the conservation importance of these special ocean places and giving guests an opportunity to view these amazing areas up-close.
All of these programs have been great. Anything that spreads the word about ocean conservation is incredibly valuable in our book, but today we also want to share what their generous annual donations have enabled Marine Conservation Institute to accomplish.
Our partnership with Holland America Line has helped us to do several significant things. First, it has helped support many of the enhancements to MPAtlas, our interactive website to learn about marine protected areas around the world. MPAtlas is a major tool for our priority initiative, the Global Ocean Refuge System (GLORES). You have heard us talk a lot about GLORES in the last year. It is designed to catalyze strong protection for at least 20% of the ecosystems in each marine biogeographic region of the world’s oceans by 2030, enough to avert mass extinction of marine life. The generous donations from Holland America Line have been critical to us gaining a foothold with GLORES, enabling us to build awareness for the initiative and work with partners to draft scientific criteria for Global Ocean Refuge status. In the early years, their grants supported our Historical Ecology efforts – Ocean’s Past.
So, Holland America Line, this week we salute your cruise line and thank you for all the support you have given us to help protect our lovely oceans!
