Blue Parks earns UN Ocean Decade endorsement

Last week, Marine Conservation Institute’s Blue Parks initiative was endorsed by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 (“UN Ocean Decade”). Blue Parks joins the UN Ocean Decade network of endorsed actions engaged in the common vision of the science we need for the ocean we want.
“The UN Ocean Decade endorsement honors Blue Parks’ deep commitment to collaboration with science, conservation, policy, and community colleagues around the world in our endeavor to safeguard marine biodiversity and revitalize the ocean,” said Dr. Sarah Hameed, Blue Parks Director and Senior Scientist at Marine Conservation Institute. “With the endorsement comes a responsibility to grow these collaborations and the resulting conservation benefits.”
The UN Ocean Decade endorsement is the result of a thorough review process in which the Blue Parks initiative was evaluated against criteria related to co-design, user and decision-maker engagement, and open data management in addition to its contributions to the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals. Our Blue Parks team is anchored by an international Science Council that ensures credible science underpins the initiative. We are thrilled to join the UN Ocean Decade and eager to make meaningful progress towards protecting at least 30% of the global ocean by 2030.

Blue Parks unites the ocean’s best protected places and the people who champion them in a strategic network to save life in the sea. Learn more about Blue Parks and help us safeguard life in the sea!
