Marine Conservation Institute to Highlight the Global Ocean Refuge System at 20th Anniversary Fundraiser Gala in San Francisco

Marine Conservation Institute is celebrating 20 years of ocean conservation success. The 20th Anniversary Fundraiser Gala will be held at the General’s Residence at Upper Fort Mason in San Francisco on Friday, November 4, 2016. The Gala will highlight the Institute’s Global Ocean Refuge System (GLORES) and achievements from our first two decades.

Since opening its doors in 1996, Marine Conservation Institute has worked tirelessly to protect our oceans, which are essential to human survival and prosperity.  During this time we have secured conservation for vast areas of the ocean from damaging activities like bottom trawling that push marine species toward extinction. The best way to maintain and recover the oceans’ diversity, abundance and resilience is to protect marine life in their ecosystems.

Currently only about 3% of the ocean is protected, and just over 1.5% is strongly protected in areas that are set aside from commercial extraction and other industrial activities such as fishing and oil and gas development.  Marine scientists recommend strong protection for 30% of our oceans to safeguard marine life, and the Global Ocean Refuge System (GLORES, pronounced glories) is designed to catalyze this protection for the world’s oceans by 2030. It is a strategic, science-based way to safeguard marine ecosystems, and will enable humans to recover marine life for us and future generations.

Join fellow ocean lovers and luminaries for a lovely evening featuring sustainable seafood and vegetarian appetizers from Chef Gordon Drysdale and his team at Scoma’s, locally crafted beer from Lagunitas, Sierra Nevada and Trumer, cider from Fox Craft, locally made wine from Deux Punk and Bos Wines and live music by HowellDevine.

A silent auction featuring items from Patagonia, CamelBak, Arcteryx, salty blue designs, SF Bay Adventures, SandCloud Towels, SeaWard, Borndiver, and more. Tickets can be purchased here.
