Responding to the ongoing dramatic declines of marine life throughout the world's oceans, Marine Conservation Institute scientists have been hard at work developing a strategy to stem and reverse it. This effort will secure strong, effective protection for 10% of each region in the ocean by 2020 and 20% by 2030. GLORES will be a worldwide system of protected areas to prevent mass extinction of marine life.
There are a lot of reasons to be hopeful and to believe that we can reach these goals, but it won't be easy and we need your help.
Currently only 1% of the ocean is protected in areas that prohibit the killing of all marine life. Scientists call these no-take marine reserves, which are the strongest kind of marine protected area. Through the Global Ocean Refuge System we can dramatically increase this number.
With the designation of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in 2006 and the Chagos Marine Reserve in 2010, there are now several large, no-take marine reserves around the world. In just a few years, we've gone from 0% of the ocean in no-take reserves to 1%. This is great progress but we have a long way to go to achieve the goals set forth in GLORES.
Your support will help us move GLORES forward. Together, we will make GLORES a reality and accelerate efforts to strongly protect ocean life around the world.
We also have some good news to share on our request for matching support for MPAtlas. Thanks to you, we are nearing our goal of raising $150,000 by November 30 to meet the Waitt Foundation's challenge grant. Your contribution today can guarantee that we make it over the top.
Launched just last year, MPAtlas is a comprehensive online resource for marine protected areas. MPAtlas is the roadmap for the conservation community - it tracks global progress towards safeguarding critical ocean areas and charts the path forward. Together, GLORES and MPAtlas will accelerate momentum to help save our oceans. Please support this vital tool for ocean conservation by making a gift today.
